Soubin Shahir’s Inspiring Journey: From Film Set to Fan’s Favorite

From Fort Kochi Roots to Filmmaking Beginnings

Born on October 12, 1983, in the vibrant port city of Fort Kochi, Kerala, Soubin Shahir grew up with cinema in his blood. His father, Babu Shahir, served as an assistant director and production controller, contributing to Malayalam cult classics like Manichithrathazhu, Godfather, and In Harihar Nagar. Surrounded by film sets, rolling cameras, and the buzz of storytelling from a young age, Soubin’s childhood was steeped in the magic and madness of moviemaking—a world he would one day make his own.

The Unexpected Arrival of an Actor

Soubin Shahir’s journey to fame was anything but conventional. He began his career behind the camera as an assistant director, learning the craft under industry greats like Fazil, Siddique, Amal Neerad, Rajeev Ravi, Santhosh Sivan, and Rafi–Mecartin. Acting wasn’t part of his original plan, but destiny had other ideas. His first on-screen appearance came in Annayum Rasoolum (2013), where his effortless performance and authentic Kochi slang immediately made him stand out.

What followed was a string of memorable roles in films like Maheshinte Prathikaaram, Premam, where his quirky PT teacher portrayal became a fan favourite, and Charlie. With his impeccable comic timing and ability to make even the briefest scene shine, Soubin quickly carved a niche for himself in Malayalam cinema.

Leading Man Moment & Acting Accolades

Soubin’s big breakthrough arrived with Sudani from Nigeria (2018), where he portrayed Majeed, a warm-hearted football manager. The role not only won him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor but also earned widespread praise for its emotional depth and genuine portrayal of human relationships.

He then delivered back-to-back impactful performances, as part of the critically acclaimed Kumbalangi Nights (2019), hailed as one of the finest films of the decade, and in Vikruthi, a touching drama inspired by real-life events.

In 2025, Soubin showcased yet another facet of his talent in the comedy-drama Machante Maalakha, directed by Boban Samuel, charming audiences with his perfect mix of humor, warmth, and small-town simplicity.

Going National: A Spotlight With Rajinikanth

Soubin’s rise has gone to a whole new level with Coolie (2025), where he joins the cast of Superstar Rajinikanth in this high-voltage action thriller. Announced by director Lokesh Kanagaraj, Soubin plays a character named Dayal, and this film marks his Tamil debut, a significant leap beyond Malayalam cinema.

Soubin has nothing but praise for Rajinikanth, calling him the ultimate “Style Mannan.” He raved about the Superstar’s electrifying presence on set, undeniably elevating the energy around him.

Even Rajinikanth himself admitted he was initially skeptical. When first hearing of Soubin’s casting, he reportedly asked Lokesh, “Who is Soubin?” But once he saw Soubin in action, specifically in the high-octane and now-viral “Monica” song sequence, he was utterly blown away.

With Coolie slated for release on August 14, 2025, and already breaking advance booking records, Soubin is officially entering the big league, standing tall alongside India’s most celebrated star.
